Fadnavis in Delhi to Finalize Maharashtra Cabinet, Shinde’s Absence Raises Eyebrows
Mumbai, Maharashtra – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is in Delhi to finalize the distribution of ministerial berths among the three allies of the Mahayuti coalition: the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP.
Fadnavis met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday night to discuss the cabinet expansion. He also met with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari.
While NCP chief Ajit Pawar is also in the national capital, conspicuously absent is Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, who agreed to become Deputy Chief Minister after reluctantly vacating the Chief Minister post for Fadnavis.
Sources indicate that the formula for ministerial berth distribution has been finalized. the BJP is expected to receive around 20 seats, the Shiv Sena 12, and the NCP 10.Maharashtra can have a total of 43 ministers, including the Chief Minister. This formula appears to reflect each ally’s performance in the recent Assembly polls, where mahayuti secured a resounding victory. The BJP won 132 seats, the Sena bagged 57, and the NCP scored 41.
Shinde’s absence casts a shadow over the proceedings, suggesting that the Sena chief has yet to fully reconcile with the power-sharing arrangement. The Sena had argued that Shinde, who led the party to victory in the Assembly polls, should continue as Chief Minister. However, the BJP insisted on the top post for Fadnavis, who served as Shinde’s deputy in the previous government. While Shinde publicly stated he would not obstruct government formation and took the oath as Deputy Chief Minister on December 5, his absence in Delhi has raised eyebrows in political circles. It remains unclear if he will travel to the capital to participate in further discussions.
power Play: Shinde’s Absence fuels Speculation as Fadnavis Finalizes Maharashtra Cabinet
As Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis negotiates the final details of the state cabinet in Delhi, the conspicuous absence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde raises eyebrows. While Fadnavis met with key Union Ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and nitin Gadkari, Shinde remained in Maharashtra, fueling speculation about growing discord within the ruling Mahayuti alliance.
Sources confirm that a formula for ministerial berth distribution has been finalized, with the BJP receiving around 20 seats, Shiv Sena 12, and NCP 10. This allocation seemingly reflects each party’s performance in the recent Assembly elections, where the Mahayuti secured a resounding victory.
Though, the Sena’s initial demand for Shinde’s continuation as Chief Minister after leading them to victory was ultimately overruled by the BJP, who insisted on Fadnavis taking the top post. Although Shinde publicly acquiesced and took oath as Deputy Chief minister, his absence from the crucial Delhi meetings suggests lingering unease within the Sena camp.
Political analysts speculate that Shinde’s absence could be a strategic move to exert pressure on the BJP, ensuring a favorable distribution of ministerial portfolios for his party. The situation remains fluid, with Shinde’s potential arrival in Delhi eagerly awaited by observers.
The formation of the Maharashtra cabinet is entering its critical phase, and the coming days will reveal whether the Mahayuti alliance can overcome internal fissures and deliver a stable government.
