Devin Vanterpool, a guard from Florida Atlantic University (FAU), has committed to the Providence men’s basketball program. The commitment was announced late Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Vanterpool joins the Friars under head coach Bryan Hodgson. The move follows a season where Vanterpool performed strongly against South Florida, the former school of Coach Hodgson, scoring 48 points across two meetings with the Bulls.
Performance and Accolades at Florida Atlantic
During the 2025-26 season, Vanterpool established himself as a primary scoring threat for the Owls. He led the team in scoring with an average of 15.8 points per game and added 6.3 rebounds per contest.
His individual success earned him the Most Improved Player honors in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Vanterpool appeared in 18 games with double-digit scoring during the year, including a performance where he recorded season highs of 11 rebounds and seven assists in a victory over Memphis.
The 6-foot-4 guard demonstrated significant scoring ability in his final appearances of the season. In a loss to South Florida, he recorded 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting. In a subsequent overtime defeat against the same opponent, he scored 26 points on 9-for-17 shooting.
Despite these performances, Vanterpool was sidelined for the final seven games of the 2025-26 campaign due to an ankle injury.
Player Profile and Skill Set
Vanterpool is described as a two-way combo guard who provides physicality at the wing position. In his sophomore season, he started all 24 games in which he was available. His offensive game includes a high volume of perimeter shooting, averaging 6.2 three-point attempts per game with a shooting percentage of 35.1%.

Defensively, Vanterpool is noted for his ability to disrupt opponents, recording 12 games with at least two steals and five games with at least two blocks. He weighs 190 pounds and is regarded as an elite defender for his position.
While strong as a scorer and defender, his role as a facilitator is less pronounced. He averaged 2.4 assists per game and 2.1 turnovers per game, with five instances of recording four or more turnovers in a single game.
This development follows a significant leap in his collegiate career. During his freshman year at FAU, Vanterpool played limited minutes, averaging only 8 minutes and 2 points per game.
Transfer Process and Recruitment
Vanterpool first indicated a possible departure from Florida Atlantic via an Instagram post on April 2, 2026. His entry into the transfer portal drew interest from several high-profile programs.
Reported interest included the following institutions:

Providence is positioned to utilize Vanterpool in multiple roles, potentially as a point guard, a primary scorer, or a third perimeter option in a lineup that has been described as undersized.

You don’t see many great college basketball teams that don’t have phenomenal leads guards
By adding Vanterpool to a roster that already includes players such as Mela, Byrd and Pate, Providence aims to establish one of the more physically imposing wing rotations in the Big East conference.
