DGT Intensifies Alcohol & Drug Controls During Christmas Week
Increased Traffic enforcement: Holiday Driving Safety Campaign Begins December 15th
As the holiday season kicks into high gear with conventional gatherings of friends and colleagues, authorities are intensifying efforts to keep roads safe. Beginning Monday, December 15th, and running through December 21st, a heightened campaign of alcohol and drug checkpoints will be in effect nationwide.
The initiative, spearheaded by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), aims to raise awareness about the serious dangers of driving under the influence. Agents from the Civil Guard’s Traffic Group will be conducting thes controls, and crucially, they will be deployed at any time of day and on any road. This means drivers should remain vigilant and assume a checkpoint could be present regardless of location or time.
Recognizing that risk is often highest near social events, the DGT has also invited local police forces to participate, focusing surveillance efforts in areas where celebrations are likely to occur. This collaborative approach seeks to proactively prevent impaired driving before it happens.
this increased enforcement isn’t simply about penalties; it’s a critical reminder that even small amounts of alcohol or any level of drug impairment considerably compromise driving ability, endangering not only the driver but all road users. Planning ahead – designating a sober driver, utilizing ride-sharing services, or opting for public transportation – are essential steps to ensure a safe and joyful holiday season for everyone.
