Blizzard Entertainment is expanding its intellectual property into streaming video by developing a new animated series based on the Diablo franchise for Netflix, according to an announcement made on September 12, 2026, by Blizzard president Johanna Faries. Speaking at the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Faries confirmed the studio’s plans to bring the dark fantasy role-playing game universe to television screens.

During the event, Faries shared that as an avid Diablo player herself who adores the rich gloom of Sanctuary, she feels thrilled to witness the realization of this endeavor.

The upcoming adaptation joins Netflix’s growing roster of video game-derived animation, which includes the studio’s existing series Castlevania. While specific plot details, release windows, and animation styles remain unannounced by the companies, rumors of a Diablo adaptation for Netflix have circulated for years. Previous reports surfaced as early as 2018, followed by statements from former Activision Blizzard Studios co-president Nick van Dyk in February 2020 indicating that an anime-style adaptation was in pre-production for the streaming platform.

Broader Franchise Expansions and Corporate Context

The Netflix series announcement accompanies a slate of broader franchise updates revealed during BlizzCon 2026. Faries indicated that the Diablo project represents only the initial phase of wider multimedia plans for the company’s major properties. And Diablo, I promise, is just the beginning, Faries said. Faries addressed the Overwatch and Warcraft fans—as well as potential audiences from other franchises—explaining that important conversations are underway, and although she unsuccessfully lobbied to reveal more details right away, she must keep the remaining secrets under wraps for now. Blizzard also utilized the convention to showcase upcoming game titles and updates across its portfolio. The studio provided a first glimpse of Diablo V, scheduled for release in spring 2029, and confirmed the Amazon as the next class heading to Diablo IV. Additional announcements included the November launch of World of Warcraft Forever, an expanded iteration of the original 2004 MMORPG, alongside an open-world StarCraft 3 slated for 2030. The 2026 convention marks the first BlizzCon held since Microsoft finalized its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023.
