Diablo Developers Unionize at Blizzard
Diablo Developers Unite: Blizzard Team Forms Union, Joining Growing Movement for Change
IRVINE, CA – In a landmark decision, a supermajority of over 450 developers working on the iconic Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment have voted to unionize. The move, formalized with the Communications Workers of america (CWA), marks a significant step in the ongoing wave of unionization efforts sweeping through the gaming industry.
The newly formed union, comprised of game developers, artists, designers, engineers, and support staff, has already received formal recognition from Microsoft, Blizzard’s parent company. This recognition underscores a growing acceptance of organized labor within the tech giant, further solidifying the union’s position.
“With every subsequent round of mass layoffs,I’ve witnessed the dread in my coworkers grow stronger because it feels like no amount of hard work is enough to protect us,” said Kelly Yeo,a game producer and a member of the organizing committee. “I am overjoyed that we have formed a union-this is just the first step for us joining a movement spreading across an industry that is tired of living in fear. We are ready to begin fighting for real change alongside our Diablo colleagues.”
The Diablo team’s decision follows a series of triumphant unionization efforts within Activision Blizzard and the broader Xbox ecosystem. Teams behind other major titles like World of Warcraft and Overwatch have already unionized with the CWA, paving the way for a more secure and equitable work habitat. Other Xbox unions include Raven Software, Zenimax, and Bethesda.
Microsoft’s labor neutrality agreement has played a crucial role in facilitating these unionization efforts. This agreement ensures a fair and unbiased process, allowing employees to freely decide whether or not to unionize without fear of reprisal.
The move comes after microsoft laid off around 9,100 employees earlier this year, including members of it’s gaming division at Activision Blizzard.
With over 3,500 Microsoft workers now organized under the CWA banner, the momentum behind unionization in the gaming industry is undeniable. The Diablo team’s decision serves as a powerful testament to the growing desire for stability, fair treatment, and a stronger voice within the workplace. As the industry continues to evolve, these unionization efforts promise to reshape the landscape, empowering developers and fostering a more lasting future for game creation.
