Participants at a recent East African economic forum emphasized the need for ESG-aligned investments and digital infrastructure development to drive regional growth, according to a report by the African Development Bank. The event, held in Nairobi in June 2026, brought together government officials, private sector leaders, and international financiers to discuss strategies for unlocking East Africa’s economic potential.

The forum focused on aligning investment practices with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles as a means to attract sustainable capital flows. “For far too long, Africa has been viewed primarily as a challenge to be managed rather than an opportunity to be seized,” said Dr. Amina Mohamed, a senior economist at the African Development Bank. “By embedding ESG criteria into our development frameworks, we can reframe the narrative and secure long-term partnerships.”

Digital infrastructure was another central topic, with participants highlighting the need for expanded broadband access, 5G rollout, and tech-enabled financial services. Kenya’s Communications Authority reported in May 2026 that 78% of the country’s population now has mobile internet access, but rural areas remain underserved. “Closing this gap is critical for inclusive growth,” noted Joseph Kinyua, CEO of Safaricom. “Investments in digital infrastructure will not only boost productivity but also empower small businesses and entrepreneurs.”

The discussions built on the African Union’s 2025 Digital Transformation Strategy, which aims to increase internet penetration across the continent to 60% by 2030. East African nations, including Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania, have pledged to allocate 2.5% of their annual budgets to digital initiatives, according to a joint statement from the East African Community (EAC).

A separate report by the World Bank in April 2026 highlighted that ESG-focused investments in East Africa grew by 15% in 2025, reaching $4.2 billion. However, the report also noted persistent challenges, including regulatory fragmentation and limited local expertise. “Harmonizing ESG standards across the region will be key to scaling these investments,” said World Bank representative Linda Njoroge.

The forum also addressed the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in advancing infrastructure projects. Tanzania’s Ministry of Works announced plans to launch a PPP portal in July 2026, aiming to streamline project approvals and attract foreign direct investment. “This initiative will create transparency and reduce bureaucratic hurdles,” said Minister Peter Mwangi.

Critics, however, caution against over-reliance on external funding. “While ESG investments are welcome, we must ensure that projects align with local priorities and do not exacerbate existing inequalities,” warned civil society advocate Nalangu Mwakasungura.

The outcomes of the Nairobi forum are expected to inform the EAC’s upcoming Economic Integration Framework, which will be finalized by December 2026. The document is anticipated to include specific targets for ESG investment and digital infrastructure expansion, as well as mechanisms for cross-border collaboration.
