Roberts, who worked at a high-end shop, routinely took jewelry home, claiming she needed it for “workshop” tasks, Humberside Police said. The police statement did not name the store. Suspicion arose when she quit and then began posting pictures from a cruise, wearing the missing items.
Detective sgt. Krista Wilkinson described Roberts as appearing “without a care in the world, dripping in diamonds, thinking she had deceived everybody.”
A subsequent search of Roberts’ home revealed a trove of stolen goods. Police discovered “thousands of pounds worth of jewelry strewn around in boxes beneath the bed and in cupboards,” according to authorities.
In total, Roberts pilfered more than $170,000 in diamonds, gold, silver, “bespoke jewelry,” and cash, wilkinson said.
Initially,Roberts denied the theft, claiming she borrowed some items and that others were planted in her bags. Though, she later pleaded guilty to theft by an employee.
Her arrest occurred at London’s Heathrow Airport. Police took Roberts into custody after finding her “wearing a substantial amount of stolen jewelry” with more stolen items in her suitcase. Body camera footage showed her attempting to discard jewelry while being escorted through the airport, police said.
