Assistant Claims “Brainwashing” in Sean “diddy” Combs Sex Trafficking Trial

NEW YORK—A former personal assistant to Sean “Diddy” Combs‍ testified Monday that she felt “brainwashed” into sending loving text messages to him for⁣ years after he allegedly raped her. The⁢ woman, identified as “Mia,” continued working for⁤ Combs until 2017.

During the federal sex trafficking ‍trial, defense attorney⁣ Brian Steel⁣ questioned Mia’s claims, suggesting fabrication. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering charges. While his ⁣lawyers acknowledge he can be violent, thay deny he used threats or his position in the music industry to abuse anyone.

Steel read aloud several affectionate texts Mia sent to Combs, including a 2019 message where she described a nightmare in which Combs rescued ⁤her from singer R. Kelly.Steel⁣ questioned why she would dream of being saved by someone⁢ who “terrorized” her. The judge sustained an objection from prosecutors.

The cross-examination, now in its fourth week, ‍has seen defense lawyers treat other government witnesses with more leniency, even eliciting positive comments about Combs.

In ⁤a 2020⁤ message, Mia recalled happy memories from her eight years working for Combs, such⁤ as drinking champagne at ⁢the Eiffel Tower and rejecting Mick Jagger’s advances. She said she only remembered “the good times.” When Steel asked why she didn’t accuse ⁢Combs of “bamboozling” her, given her allegations, Mia replied, “Because I was still ⁣brainwashed.”

Mia explained that the surroundings, characterized by extreme highs and lows, led to “huge confusion in‍ trusting my instincts.”‍ She denied fabricating her assault claims, stating, “I have never lied in this courtroom and I never will lie in this courtroom. Everything I said is true.” She added that⁢ she felt obligated to speak out after others made allegations against Combs.

“It’s ⁢been a long process. I’m untangling ⁤things. ⁢I’m in therapy,” Mia said.

Mia testified that Combs forcibly kissed and molested her at his 40th birthday party in 2009, shortly after she began working for him.Months later, he allegedly raped her⁢ in his Los Angeles home. She testified last week that subsequent sexual assaults were “random, sporadic, so oddly ⁢spaced out where I would think they would never happen again.”

Prosecutors ⁣criticized Steel’s cross-examination, arguing that‍ his focus on Mia’s‍ social media history was excessive and irrelevant. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maureen Comey accused Steel of yelling at and humiliating the witness, warning that his approach could deter future victims from testifying. Judge Arun Subramanian cautioned ⁤Steel about overusing questions about Mia’s social media posts praising Combs.

What’s⁢ next

The trial is‍ expected to continue with further witness testimony and arguments.
