Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction in the price of high-speed diesel by Rs32.12 per liter on Friday, April 17, 2026, bringing the new price down to Rs353.43 from the previous rate of Rs385.54.
The decision was made in response to a sharp decline in global crude oil prices following Iran’s announcement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during a ceasefire, which triggered a significant selloff in international markets.
Brent crude futures fell $12.87, or 12.95%, to $86.52 a barrel by mid-morning in New York, reaching a session low of $86.09, while West Texas Intermediate crude dropped $13.50, or 14.26%, to $81.19, hitting an intraday low of $80.56 — marking the largest one-day decline for both contracts since April 8 and their lowest levels since March 10.
The prime minister directed authorities to ensure the benefit of the price cut reaches consumers “as soon as possible,” with the new rate taking effect at midnight.
