A serendipitous discovery by amateur photographer Elio Della Ferrera has revealed an extraordinary concentration of dinosaur footprints high in the Italian Alps, offering new insights into the behavior of these ancient creatures.
Discovery in the High Alps
In September 2023, Elio Della Ferrera, while photographing deer and vultures, stumbled upon an unprecedented paleontological find. His camera, focusing on a vertical rock face approximately 2,000 feet above the road near Bormio, Lombardy, initially caught a strange pattern.Intrigued, Della Ferrera ascended the challenging rock face to investigate.
“The big surprise was not so much discovering the footprints, but discovering such an enormous amount,” Della Ferrera commented, as reported by Reuters. “There are really tens of thousands of footprints up there, more or less well preserved.”
What the Footprints Reveal
The footprints are attributed to long-necked, bipedal herbivores, likely similar to Plateosaurus, which lived during the late Triassic period.
