Jonathan Anderson Named Creative director at Dior
Updated June 2, 2025
Jonathan Anderson, the former designer at Loewe, will now lead Christian dior, a key brand within the LVMH luxury group. Anderson is only the second person to oversee Dior’s men’s, women’s, and couture lines.
The announcement comes after Maria Grazia Chiuri’s exit last week, ending her nine-year tenure as Dior’s first female designer. Anderson’s first collection is expected in late june, marking a new chapter for the fashion house. Luca Solca, a luxury analyst at Bernstein SG, called the change a “step in the right direction.”
Dior represents nearly 20% of LVMH’s fashion and leather goods segment, its most profitable area, overseen by CEO Bernard Arnault’s daughter, Delphine Arnault. The brand has faced challenges amid a luxury market slowdown after recent price increases.
Delphine Arnault told Vogue Business that Anderson is “the most talented designer of his generation” and brings experience managing large teams from his time at Loewe, despite being only 40.
The Anderson Effect on Luxury Fashion
Anderson joined Loewe, acquired by LVMH in 1996, at age 29 with the task of revitalizing the brand, while also running his own label, JW Anderson. His collections blended customary and modern elements. Rihanna’s wearing of Loewe’s red jumpsuit at the 2023 Super Bowl provided a viral moment for the brand.
Loewe also benefited from the “quiet luxury” trend.Sales surged from approximately €230 million in 2014 to between €1.5 billion and €2 billion in 2024, according to estimates from Morgan Stanley and Bernstein SG.
Jelena Sokolova, an analyst at Morningstar, noted that Anderson’s track record at Loewe positions him well to strengthen Dior, which she considers a “weaker link” in LVMH’s portfolio. Sokolova believes Anderson’s unified creative direction will create a more consistent brand representation.
The role presents challenges, as Dior typically divides creative direction between men’s and women’s fashion due to the demanding nature of developing numerous collections. The stakes are high for a brand of Dior’s stature.
Arnault said that new artistic direction can be a challenge for any house, requiring a few seasons to fully realize the vision, but expressed confidence that Anderson is energized by the prospect.
recent months have seen creative leadership changes at Gucci and Chanel amid a rocky period for the luxury sector. These shifts aim to spur growth, but success is not guaranteed and requires new designs, a recovery in high-end spending, and increased brand appeal.
What’s next
Industry observers will closely watch Jonathan Anderson’s debut collections for Dior, assessing his ability to balance the brand’s heritage with his innovative design approach in a challenging luxury market.
