Dirceu’s Stunning Reversal: Lava Jato Convictions Overturned, Paving Way for Politician’s Triumphant Return

October 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Gilmar Mendes annuls all the convictions that Sergio Moro imposed on Dirceu in Lava Jato. With this, the historical PT leader regains his political rights and is no longer considered dirty.

José Dirceu

This Monday, Minister Gilmar Mendes revoked all the convictions that Sergio Moro imposed on José Dirceu in Lava Jato. With the decision, in practice, he regains his political rights and is no longer considered dirty. The decision responds to a request from Dirceu’s defense to extend to him the decision of the 2nd Panel of the STF which considered Moro a suspect in order to judge Lula.

In the decision, the STF minister understood that the actions against Dirceu brought by the operation were intended to serve as a “foundation” for the complaints that were later presented against Lula.

Therefore, Gilmar understood that it was necessary to extend to the former minister the understanding that nullified Lula’s convictions. “The extension, therefore, is legalized not as a general measure, which benefits any other person investigated in Lava Jato, but because of indications that the judge and prosecutors have adapted strategies against these defendants, with the conviction of one of them forming the basis of the complaint filed against another”.

“In view of the above, considering the specific situation of the defendant, I allow the request of the defense to decide to extend the Habeas Corpus order (?) revoking all the procedural actions of the former federal judge Sergio Moro in these processes and in related procedures. , only in relation to the former minister José Dirceu”, said the decision of the STF minister.

José Dirceu

José Dirceu is one of the main political actors and a prominent figure in Brazil’s democratic struggles, from the resistance against the dictatorship in the 1960s and 1970s, when he was arrested and exiled in Mexico, to the consolidation of a Party the Workers (PT). – of which he is one of the founders – as the largest mass society in the country.

The former prime minister of the Civil House is credited with the statements that made it possible for the PT to become president of the Republic in 2002 and the political governance that guaranteed the developmental project of the governments of Lula and Dilma.

Dirceu says that “60 years of living in politics, the exchange and learning from mistakes” earned him the label of ‘strategist’.

Dirceu was arrested five times, once in 1968, during the UNE (National Union of Students) Congress, and four more since 2013, for alleged crimes related to Mensalão and the Lava Jato operation.

During this same period, Dirceu recalls, Brazilian democracy began to weaken. “The press was silent between 2013 and 2018, when we were attacked, kicked, spat on, our flags were burnt. This hatred, this violence was born there, with all the support of the PSDB and DEM, a large part of the MDB and especially the mainstream press. They overthrew Dilma to criminalize the PT. This is where what we are experiencing now was born and it needs to be stopped,” he said.
