Direct Flights from Singapore and Hong Kong to Hobart: Tasmania’s New Tourism Strategy
Direct Flights from Hobart to Asia
Tasmania plans to attract Asian tourists by establishing direct flights from Hobart to Singapore and Hong Kong. Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced discussions with Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific to make this happen.
Premier Rockliff stated, “These are two world-leading air carriers, and we’d love to see them flying direct to Hobart.” The state tourism authority highlights that visitors from Singapore and Hong Kong typically spend more during their stay, making these markets valuable.
Hobart Airport is upgrading its single runway with a $20 million investment to support larger planes like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. Rockliff said, “With upgrades at Hobart Airport, we’re soon going to fly to and from cities in Asia.” This upgrade will reduce the need for stops in Melbourne on trips to Asia.
Currently, Singapore Airlines serves seven Australian cities, and Cathay Pacific serves five. However, Tasmania remains one flight away from these routes. Airlines often start new routes seasonally, which could apply to flights between Asia and Tasmania.
Additionally, Hobart will open a new Qantas Club by 2027 as part of its expansion program.
