Lopez Ramirez Rides U.S. Women’s Open Momentum, Dirt Bikes
ERIN, Wis. — Julia Lopez Ramirez, the 22-year-old Spaniard, credits dirt bikes with helping her navigate the mental terrain of the U.S. Women’s Open. Lopez Ramirez, a long drive specialist, shot a third-round 68 at Erin Hills, vaulting her into second place, just one stroke behind leader Maja Stark.
“Every time I go home, I like to go and have my go-around,” Lopez Ramirez said. “Obviously you don’t do anything crazy because obviously you cannot get injured in the middle of seasons…But it’s something I really enjoy and it’s exciting.”
Her power off the tee has been a major advantage. Lopez Ramirez is averaging 290.8 yards on measured holes, a full 12 yards longer than her nearest competitor. Her caddie, Lauren Whyte, marvels at Lopez Ramirez’s prodigious distance. “I just admire it from afar,” Whyte said.
Whyte, who previously worked with Lopez Ramirez at Mississippi State, believes the course suits her game, allowing her to use her driver frequently. Lopez Ramirez, who turned pro after earning her LPGA card in December, feels she is adjusting to the rhythm and demands of professional tournaments.
“It’s quite overwhelming out here,” Lopez Ramirez said. “Just being a rookie, I think it’s very hard to get used to the rhythm, the tournaments, just like what you have to do…I think at this point, I’m very used to how the tournament works…that I feel like mentally I’m in a really good place and my swing is getting into a really good position.”
As for the final round, Lopez Ramirez is embracing the challenge. “Honestly it’s very exciting,” Lopez Ramirez said. “I’m very excited for tomorrow. I’m just going to keep playing my game, have a lot of fun out there and play my game.”
