The European Environment Agency (EEA) recently published a report on swimming water quality. It evaluated 22,081 sites across EU member states, Albania, and Switzerland. These sites were tested for bacterial contaminants like E. coli. The assessment categorized water as excellent, good, sufficient, or poor. The best rating means the water is safe for swimming.

The EU Bathing Water Directive of 2006 improved water quality. As of this report, 85% of popular swimming waters in Europe received an excellent rating. Only 1.5% were rated as poor.

Top Countries for Clean Coastal Waters

  1. Croatia – 99.1% of 894 tested sites rated excellent.
  2. Cyprus – 97.6% of 123 tested sites rated excellent.
  3. Greece – 95.8% of 1,728 tested sites rated excellent.
  4. Slovenia – 95.2% of 21 tested sites rated excellent.
  5. Belgium – 94.6% of 41 tested sites rated excellent (tie).
  6. Bulgaria – 94.6% of 92 tested sites rated excellent (tie).

Cleanest Inland Waters in Europe

For those who prefer lakes and rivers, several countries excel in water quality.

  1. Bulgaria – 100% of 4 tested sites rated excellent.
  2. Greece – 100% of 3 tested sites rated excellent.
  3. Ireland – 100% of 4 tested sites rated excellent.
  4. Romania – 100% of 1 tested site rated excellent.
  5. Austria – 96.9% of 260 tested sites rated excellent.

Overall Cleanest Waters in Europe

When considering both coastal and inland waters, Cyprus leads with 97.6% of its sites rated excellent.

  1. Cyprus – 97.6% of 123 tested sites rated excellent.
  2. Austria – 96.9% of 260 tested sites rated excellent.
  3. Croatia – 96.7% of 936 tested sites rated excellent.
  4. Greece – 95.8% of 1,731 tested sites rated excellent.
