November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Cork Airport and New Destination Izmir, Turkey

Cork Airport announced a new service to Izmir, Turkey, starting on May 31, 2025. This flight will operate twice a week until October. SunExpress Airlines, a Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines joint venture, will manage the route.

This addition is significant as it is the first direct flight from Cork to Turkey in over a decade. Barry Holland, Cork Airport Communications Manager, stated that Izmir will likely become a popular destination for travelers.

Attractions in Izmir

Izmir offers much to explore. It is a city known for its rich history, culture, and cuisine, with summer temperatures often reaching the late 20s and early 30s Celsius. Importantly, Izmir is generally more affordable than other European cities like Rome and Paris.

A must-see site is the ancient city of Ephesus, located about 80 km from Izmir. This UNESCO World Heritage site showcases ruins from the tenth century BC, including structures once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Local Markets and Landmarks

In Izmir, visitors can explore the Kizlaragasi Inn. This market, over 270 years old, offers handicrafts, antiques, and textiles. The Izmir Clock is a famous city landmark known for its accuracy.

The city also features archaeological sites like the Agora, where traces of ancient life can be seen.

Food and Drink

Food is a highlight of Izmir. One popular dish is Gözleme, a thin dough crepe filled with various ingredients. Prices in Izmir remain lower than in many European cities.

For example, a meal for two can cost around €21, and a typical pint of beer is about €2. Turkish coffee is also affordable, usually around €3.

Transport and Accessibility

Izmir provides excellent public transport, including buses, subways, and trams. A metro connects the airport to the city center for just a few euros. Renting bicycles is also cost-effective.

Overall, Izmir promises to be an attractive destination for Cork travelers, offering cultural experiences, beautiful weather, and affordable prices, all easily reached from Cork Airport.
