What strategies does Mercy Health System implement to enhance patient experience and satisfaction?

Interview with Dr. Emily Carter, Chief Medical Officer of Mercy Health System

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Carter. Mercy Health System is recognized as a leader in patient experience. What do you attribute this recognition to?

Dr. Carter: Thank you for having me. Our recognition as the top large health system for patient experience by NRC Health is truly a reflection of our dedicated staff and commitment to patient-centered care. We strive to foster an environment where patients feel valued, listened to, and cared for. This culture starts from the top down and is a shared goal across our 50,000 staff members.

Interviewer: That’s impressive. With over 50 hospitals and specialty clinics, how does Mercy ensure quality care across such a vast network?

Dr. Carter: We maintain high standards through rigorous training, continuous quality improvement initiatives, and by utilizing patient feedback. Our specialties in areas like heart care, children’s health, and orthopedics are supported by expert teams who collaborate across our various facilities to ensure consistency in care. Moreover, our outpatient facilities and over 900 physician practices allow for integrated care, which is essential for effective patient outcomes.

Interviewer: Mercy also provides a significant amount of free care and community benefits. Could you elaborate on this aspect?

Dr. Carter: Absolutely. In the fiscal year 2023, we delivered over half a billion dollars in free care and community benefits. This includes charity care and services for Medicaid patients who are often underfunded. We believe in supporting the health of the communities we serve, which spans multiple states. Our outreach programs play a vital role in ensuring accessibility to health services, particularly in underserved areas.

Interviewer: Mercy operates in several states. How does the system adapt its services to meet the unique needs of each community?

Dr. Carter: Each community we serve has distinct health challenges and needs. We conduct regular community health assessments to identify specific local health issues. This data guides our program development and resource allocation. By building partnerships with local organizations and engaging community members, we tailor our services to better support the health outcomes in those areas.

Interviewer: It sounds like Mercy is truly committed to community health. What future initiatives are you excited about?

Dr. Carter: Looking ahead, we are excited about expanding our telehealth services, which have seen tremendous growth. This will enhance accessibility for patients who might not seek traditional in-person care. Additionally, we are investing in new technologies and data analytics to further improve patient experience and outcomes. Our ultimate goal is to remain on the cutting edge while staying true to our mission of compassionate care.

Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Carter, for sharing these insights. It’s clear that Mercy Health System plays a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare in the regions it serves.

Dr. Carter: Thank you for having me. We are proud of our work at Mercy and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in our communities.
