The film tells the story of an elderly man named Sergio Chamy, hired as a private investigator to go undercover in a nursing home in El Monte, Chile. He is tasked with investigating claims of mistreatment by the staff.

TV creator Mike Schur loved the documentary and has adapted it into a Netflix series titled A Man on the Inside. Schur found the documentary powerful and relatable, highlighting the reality of aging. He was particularly struck by Sergio’s character, describing him as a lovely human being. Sergio, recently widowed, responds to a job ad as part of his coping process.

Initially, Schur did not plan to adapt the story. However, after discussing it with his producing partner Morgan Sackett, they decided to fictionalize it, casting Ted Danson in the lead role. Schur previously worked with Danson on the acclaimed series The Good Place. They realized that Danson’s charisma could mirror Sergio’s charm.
