University research facilities in Namur and UHasselt offer visits featuring solar observation gear and climate change research.

Inside the Hidden UNamur Astronomical Observatory

The astronomical observatory dome at UNamur is tucked away inside an interior courtyard of the institution. Weighing more than a ton and shaped like an inverted vase, this vault reaches a height of twenty meters. Because it is hidden from immediate view, visitors wishing to get close to the large solar telescope and the ultra-fast Schmidt astrophotograph—which is capable of carrying out wide-field surveys of the night sky—must rely on scheduled public access. These tours are organized on average every two months.

Climate Research at the UHasselt Ecotron

Located in the far east of the country, the UHasselt Ecotron serves as a research center where scientists study the effects of climate change on biodiversity. Positioned at the foot of a slag heap belonging to the former Maasmechelen coal mine, this distinctive building is topped with air-conditioned domes. Visitors can approach the facility by booking a guide through the Hoge Kempen National Park.

KU Leuven Anniversary Trail

In addition to the sites in Namur and Limburg, KU Leuven has laid out a 5.5-kilometer trail to celebrate the institution’s 600th anniversary. The path navigates between science and art, passing by Alicja Kwade’s artwork titled “Carriers,” which features a massive boulder resting on chairs to celebrate collective intelligence. Meanwhile, KU Leuven students are also undertaking a solar vehicle challenge aimed at launching a Belgian car in a legendary solar vehicle race in the United States.
