Disney Faces Boycott Threats and FCC Scrutiny After Jimmy Kimmel Suspension
Table of Contents
Disney is confronting potential financial repercussions and regulatory challenges following its decision to suspend late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over controversial remarks made about Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist. The fallout includes calls for boycotts of Disney’s streaming platforms and theme parks, as well as scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Kimmel’s Comments and the Backlash
During his show, Kimmel criticized those he termed the “MAGA gang” for attempting to downplay the actions of a young man who allegedly threatened Charlie Kirk. Following the segment, FCC Chair Brendan Carr labeled Kimmel’s comments ”truly sick” and suggested potential regulatory action against both the network and Disney, issuing a veiled threat: “we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way.”
Broadcast Affiliates Drop the Show
The controversy quickly escalated as major ABC affiliate groups took action. Nexstar Media Group, which owns 32 ABC stations and is currently pursuing a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, announced it would preempt Kimmel’s show “for the foreseeable future.” Sinclair Broadcasting, the largest ABC affiliate group, also removed the show and demanded Kimmel issue an apology to Kirk’s family and make a “substantial personal donation” to them and Turning Point USA.
FCC Chair Doubles Down
After Kimmel’s suspension, Carr reiterated his stance, telling CNBC “we’re not done yet.” His actions have garnered support from republicans, including former President Donald Trump, but have also raised concerns among some conservatives about potential government overreach into free speech.
Free Speech Concerns Emerge
Senator Ted Cruz, chairman of the senate Commerce Committee (which has jurisdiction over the FCC), expressed strong opposition to Carr’s approach. While stating his disapproval of Kimmel’s comments, cruz warned that government intervention in media content could ultimately harm conservatives.”I think it is unbelievably dangerous for government to put itself in the position of saying, ‘We’re going to decide what speech we like and what we don’t,'” Cruz said on his podcast. He cautioned that such power could be used to silence conservative voices in the future.
Disney’s Financial Stakes
The potential for boycotts poses a notable financial risk to Disney. The company’s recent quarterly report highlighted the importance of its streaming and parks divisions in driving earnings. Disney+ added 1.8 million subscribers, reaching 128 million, and combined with Hulu, totals 183 million subscribers. This growth helped the streaming business move out of a previous loss, offsetting weaker performance in film and TV. Additionally, the parks and experiences division saw increased revenue and operating income due to higher customer spending and hotel occupancy.
