Disney is confronting potential‍ financial repercussions‍ and regulatory challenges⁣ following its decision to suspend late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over controversial remarks⁢ made about‍ Charlie ⁢Kirk, a conservative⁤ activist. ⁣The fallout includes⁣ calls for boycotts of Disney’s‍ streaming ‌platforms and theme ⁣parks, as well as scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Kimmel’s Comments ‍and ⁢the Backlash

During his show, Kimmel criticized ‍those‌ he termed the “MAGA gang”⁣ for ⁢attempting⁣ to downplay the actions of a young ‍man who allegedly threatened Charlie Kirk. Following the segment, FCC Chair Brendan Carr labeled ⁤Kimmel’s comments ⁣”truly sick” and suggested potential regulatory action against both the network and Disney, issuing a veiled threat: “we can⁣ do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way.”

Broadcast Affiliates Drop the Show

The controversy quickly ⁢escalated as major⁤ ABC affiliate groups ‌took action. Nexstar Media Group, which owns 32 ABC stations⁤ and is currently pursuing a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, announced it would preempt Kimmel’s show “for the foreseeable‍ future.” Sinclair ‌ Broadcasting, ‌the largest ABC ⁣affiliate group, also removed the show and ‍demanded Kimmel ⁣issue an apology to Kirk’s family‍ and ⁤make a “substantial personal⁤ donation” to them ‍and Turning Point⁣ USA.

FCC Chair Doubles Down

After Kimmel’s suspension, Carr reiterated his stance,⁤ telling⁤ CNBC “we’re not done yet.” His ⁢actions have garnered support from republicans, including former President Donald Trump, but have also raised concerns among some conservatives about potential government overreach into free speech.

Free Speech Concerns Emerge

Senator⁢ Ted Cruz, chairman of the senate Commerce Committee ‍(which has jurisdiction over the ⁢FCC), expressed strong opposition to Carr’s approach. ‌While stating his‌ disapproval of Kimmel’s comments, cruz warned that‌ government intervention in media content could ultimately harm conservatives.”I think it is unbelievably dangerous for government to put itself in the position of saying, ‘We’re going to decide‌ what speech⁣ we like and what ⁢we don’t,'” Cruz said on his ⁣podcast. He cautioned that such power could be used to silence conservative voices in the future.

Disney’s Financial Stakes

The potential for boycotts poses a notable financial risk to Disney. The company’s recent quarterly report⁣ highlighted the importance of⁢ its⁢ streaming and parks divisions in driving ⁢earnings. Disney+ added 1.8 million subscribers,‌ reaching 128 million, ‍and‍ combined with Hulu, totals 183 ‍million subscribers. This growth ‍helped ⁤the streaming business move out of a previous loss, offsetting weaker performance in film and TV. Additionally, the⁤ parks and experiences division‍ saw increased revenue and operating⁢ income due ⁣to ⁤higher customer spending and hotel occupancy.

Disney did not instantly respond to a request for comment.
