Disney+ has halted development of a planned television series reimagining of the 2003 film “Holes,” based on Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel. the project, intended for the streaming platform, was scrapped after an initial pilot order.
Plot and Cast
The proposed series centered on a teenage girl wrongly convicted of a crime and sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp. There,she and other campers were forced to dig holes in the arid lakebed under the watchful eye of the Warden,for an undisclosed purpose. The story aimed to explore connections between the teen’s personal history and the camp’s mysterious past.
Shay Rudolph, known for her role in “The Baby-Sitters club,” was cast in the lead role. Aidy Bryant (“Shrill”) and Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) were slated to portray the Warden. Additional cast members included Noah Cottrell, Flor Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Iesha Daniels, sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press.
Production team
Alina Mankin was attached as the writer and executive producer of the pilot episode. Liz Phang was set to serve as showrunner and executive producer. Jac Schaeffer was to direct the pilot, also executive producing alongside drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, and Mike Medavoyl of Walden Media and Shamrock Holdings.
Original Film Legacy
The 2003 film adaptation of “Holes” featured a notable cast including Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Khleo Thomas, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, DulĂ© Hill, and Eartha Kitt. The film received positive reviews and remains a popular adaptation of Sachar’s novel.
