for decades, Walt Disney Studios has explored adapting Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” into an animated feature, but the project has remained elusive. Artists in 1940, 1946 and 1951 tried their hand at the material, but the episodic nature of the story proved challenging.
In the early 2000s, Paul and Gaetan Brizzi, known for their work on “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Fantasia 2000,” were assigned to the project. They created elaborate storyboards, but Disney Feature Animation ultimately passed on the film. Executives felt that Cervantes’ stories did not translate well to animation, and the Brizzis’ intense, dark take on the material was deemed too adult.
Another ambitious project that never saw the light of day was “Chanticleer,” based on Edmond rostand’s play. This animated film about Parisian poultry has become known as the best film disney never made.
