The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a cherished holiday tradition, has featured Disney characters for nearly 90 years. From Mickey Mouse’s early appearance to Minnie Mouse’s highly anticipated debut, these balloons have brought joy to millions.
The parade began in 1924, but it wasn’t until 1927 that balloons became a staple. Early balloons, including Felix the Cat, were released into the sky with a reward offered for their return. This practice ended in 1932 after a near-miss with an airplane.
In 1934, Mickey Mouse made his frist appearance. Walt Disney collaborated with Macy’s on the design of the Mickey Mouse balloon, which was joined by Pluto, Horace Horsecollar, and characters from The Three Little Pigs. Macy’s required its star logo to be featured on each Disney balloon.

Donald Duck joined the parade in 1935 with a balloon towering over Mickey’s. Donald returned in 1984 to celebrate his 50th birthday.
The 2001 parade, weeks after the 9/11 attacks, was especially memorable. Security was tight, and then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani rode on a float to applause. Despite the tension, the balloons brought joy to the city.

Macy’s holds a rehearsal event, Balloon Fest, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. In 2015,the Buzz Lightyear balloon was showcased at the D23 Expo in California.
Mickey Mouse returned to the parade in 2000 as a bandleader and again in 2009 as Sailor Mickey. disney has continued to feature characters like Buzz Lightyear and Olaf.

In 1992,Macy’s brought balloons to Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando for a holiday display, which later inspired the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

Minnie Mouse makes her long-awaited debut in the Macy’s Disney celebration this year. Pop-up shops offer exclusive merchandise to celebrate her first appearance.
