Disney, Universal Sue Midjourney Over AI Image Copyright Infringement

Updated June 11, 2025

Entertainment giants Disney and Universal have joined forces to sue⁣ Midjourney, an AI image generator, alleging‌ widespread copyright ‌infringement. The lawsuit contends that Midjourney’s artificial intelligence (AI) produces unauthorized copies of copyrighted characters, including those ⁢from “Star ‌wars” ⁤and “The‌ Simpsons.”

The⁢ complaint‌ states that Disney and Universal have invested heavily in ⁣American creative innovation for over a century.⁤ They allege that Midjourney is profiting from this investment ⁢by offering an AI image-generating service ⁢that ⁢acts as a “virtual vending machine,” creating endless unauthorized copies of‌ thier copyrighted works.

The companies assert that Midjourney is a “copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism.” The lawsuit includes examples of AI-generated images of characters‍ like Darth Vader, Homer simpson, Shrek, and the Minions, which Disney and Universal claim Midjourney produced.

Disney and Universal allege that Midjourney⁣ generated⁢ $300 million ⁣in revenue last year and ignored their demands to cease ⁤its activities. They are seeking a jury trial to resolve the dispute over AI copyright and intellectual property.

What’s next

The outcome of this lawsuit could substantially impact the future of AI image generation and copyright⁢ law, possibly setting precedents for how intellectual property is protected ⁢in ‍the age of artificial⁢ intelligence.
