‘Avatar’ Experience Replacing ‘Monsters, Inc.’ at Disneyland
Disneyland Resort is set to replace its “Monsters, inc.” ride with a new Avatar ride experience inspired by the aquatic world of James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The “Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!” attraction will close in early 2026 to begin construction on the Avatar-themed land in the Hollywood Backlot area, Disney announced.
Unlike the “Avatar” ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, which draws from the first “Avatar” film, the Anaheim park’s new attraction will focus on the Pandora seen in “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The initial announcement of the avatar experience occurred last summer at a fan convention, promising a “dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale.”
Details about the ride itself and the construction timeline remain undisclosed. Though, concept art on the Disney Parks Blog suggests a water-based ride where guests travel by boat through a bioluminescent lagoon and encounter a massive Tulkun, a whale-like creature.
The “Monsters, Inc.” ride, which opened in 2006, offered a fast-paced tour of Monstropolis, recreating scenes from the original 2001 Pixar film as guests helped Mike and Sulley rescue Boo.
A “Coco”-themed attraction is among changes coming to Disneyland.

In addition to the “Avatar” project, Disneyland is developing a “Coco”-themed attraction set to begin construction in the fall. Disney stated in a blog post that the “Coco” ride will feature characters and music from the movie, joining Miguel on a journey to the land of the dead, marking the first ”Coco” ride in a Disney park.
The resort is also working on two new “Avengers” attractions and a parking structure with approximately 6,000 spaces, shuttle and rideshare areas, and a pedestrian bridge connecting Harbor Boulevard to the transportation hub.
Disney said in a blog post,”This is just the beginning of exciting growth here at Disneyland Resort,” adding,”We look forward to sharing more about all of these projects in the future.”
What’s next
Parkgoers can anticipate further announcements regarding the “Avatar” ride’s specifics and the construction timelines for both the “Coco” and “Avengers” attractions as Disneyland continues its expansion.
