Disney has updated the lyrics of one of its most famous songs, “It’s a Small World,” for the first time in 60 years. Richard Sherman, the original songwriter, wrote a new verse shortly before he passed away in May 2024. He originally created the song with his brother, Robert Sherman, for Walt Disney’s attraction in 1964.
The new verse is featured in a short film called The Last Verse, released by Disney in honor of Richard Sherman. The film includes the voice of a child singing the new lyrics, highlighting themes of unity and love. The new lines include: “Mother Earth unites us in heart and mind, and the love we give makes us humankind.”
Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger honored the Sherman brothers, stating that their music has deeply impacted global culture. The Sherman brothers’ original song debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair as part of the ride. Due to its popularity, the ride was moved to Disneyland, where it opened in May 1966.
Since then, versions of the ride have appeared at Disney parks worldwide, except for Shanghai Disneyland. The Sherman brothers also created music for other projects, earning Oscars and Grammys for their work.
The Last Verse is currently available for streaming on Disney+ and other Disney social channels, including YouTube.
