What Happened: The Details of the Fraud
Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey has been sentenced after admitting to dishonestly inducing 13 people to give him money under the false pretense of needing treatment for cancer he did not have.
Carey arrived at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Friday morning for the sentencing hearing. The case was listed as number 36 before Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The sentencing had been previously adjourned on Wednesday when the court learned Carey was hospitalized at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe.
Carey (54) pleaded guilty last July to 10 of 21 charges related to the fraud. The State requested a nolle prosequi for one charge, with the remaining charges to be considered.
Underlying health Issues & Defense Arguments
During the court proceedings, Colman cody SC, representing Carey, stated that while his client did not have cancer, he was dealing with “genuinely meaningful” health issues. Carey underwent heart surgery last year and continues to receive care for a “genuine” heart condition, alongside mental health challenges.
