Hurling Star Admits to Defrauding Thirteen Individuals
Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey, 52, is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty to defrauding 13 people by falsely claiming he had cancer and soliciting funds for treatment in the United States. Carey, of The Drive, Newtown, Maynooth, Co. Kildare,entered his plea at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in July,averting a planned trial.
The charges stem from incidents between January 2014 and September 2022. carey pleaded guilty to 10 of the 21 counts against him, all relating to dishonestly obtaining money through the false cancer diagnosis.
High-Profile Victim Among Those Deceived
Businessman Denis O’Brien is among the individuals Carey defrauded, having provided financial support for purported cancer treatment during the eight-year period, in violation of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act. The total amount of money involved has not been publicly disclosed.
Health Issues and psychological Evaluation
While the fraud centered on a fabricated cancer diagnosis, Carey’s defense counsel revealed in July that the former athlete does suffer from “genuinely meaningful” health problems and underwent heart surgery last year. Ahead of Wednesday’s sentencing, a psychological report was commissioned to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the offenses.
Carey has been released on bail with strict conditions pending the sentencing hearing.
