WIMBLEDON, England – Novak Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, shared some playful advice with Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked player, during a practice session at the All england club. The exchange occurred after Djokovic crashed Sabalenka’s news conference Saturday.
The two tennis stars had been practicing together in planning for the grass-court Grand Slam. Djokovic interrupted Sabalenka’s press briefing, urging her to finish quickly so he could take over the podium.
Sabalenka then turned the tables, interviewing Djokovic about their time on the court. “What did you think about hitting with me?” sabalenka asked. “How do you see my level? Am I good?”
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, responded with a swift-witted assessment. “I think you have the potential. You’re like a really talented player,” he said.
Though, he also offered a critique of Sabalenka’s playing style.”Can I be honest? You’re lacking intensity on the court,” Djokovic said, drawing laughter. “you don’t have enough intensity. It’s too flat. you’ve got to lighten up a little bit and put some power into it.”
Djokovic is no stranger to such playful interactions. In 2011, Caroline Wozniacki, then ranked No. 1, interrupted his news conference at Wimbledon, peppering him with questions.
Djokovic will begin his quest for an eighth Wimbledon title Tuesday against Alexandre Muller of France. Sabalenka is scheduled to play Carson Branstine on Monday.
