Dmitry Medvedev’s political journey is a fascinating⁣ study ⁢in loyalty and evolution, charting a‍ course from⁢ a legal career in St. Petersburg to the presidency of Russia and, most recently, ⁤to a‍ prominent role as a vocal supporter of Vladimir Putin’s policies, especially in the context of the Ukraine conflict. His career ⁢trajectory⁢ highlights a deep and enduring connection ⁣with Putin, shaping both their individual paths and the broader landscape of Russian politics.

Early Career and Rise to Power

Medvedev’s early professional life began in ⁣academia and law. ⁢After graduating from Leningrad State University in 1987, ⁤he pursued a career in law, eventually joining the city council in⁣ St.Petersburg. It was in 1991, while working ⁣for the then Mayor of St. Petersburg, ⁢Anatoly Sobchak, that Medvedev’s path intersected with that of Vladimir Putin. This early association laid the groundwork for their future political collaboration.

When Putin became acting President of Russia in ‍December 1999, Medvedev was brought into his inner circle. ⁢He played a pivotal role in leading⁣ Putin’s presidential campaign in 2000‍ and was subsequently appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to the Presidential ‍Executive Office. His influence continued to grow, culminating in‍ his appointment as First Deputy⁤ Prime minister in November 2005. Recognizing Medvedev’s capabilities and loyalty, Putin named him as his successor in 2007.

presidency and Key Reforms

On May 7, 2008, Dmitry Medvedev assumed the presidency of Russia. This term was a single stint, as the constitution‍ at the time barred Putin from serving a third consecutive term. Shortly after his inauguration, Medvedev nominated Putin to serve as Prime Minister, a move that underscored their continued partnership.

During his presidency, Medvedev campaigned with the slogan “Freedom is better‍ than no freedom,” and he ⁤initiated several significant reforms. Thes included the decriminalization of defamation, a move aimed at fostering ‍greater freedom⁤ of expression. On the ⁤international stage, he negotiated ‍with then-U.S. President Barack Obama ⁤to reduce the number of nuclear ⁢warheads held by both nations.Russia also acceded to the World Trade Association (WTO) under his leadership, and he announced an end to counterinsurgency operations in Chechnya. though, his presidency also coincided with the outbreak of war in⁢ georgia in⁢ 2008.

Return to Prime ⁢Minister and Shifting Role

Following the completion of his presidential term, Vladimir Putin returned to the presidency in March 2012. Dmitry Medvedev then transitioned to the roles of head of the United Russia party and Prime Minister of Russia, a position he held from May 8, 2012, until 2020.Over time, Medvedev’s public profile gradually diminished, and he eventually resigned as Prime Minister.

Following his tenure as Prime minister, Medvedev was appointed as a deputy of the⁣ newly established‍ National Security Council, an advisory body chaired ⁤by President Putin. This appointment signaled his continued importance within the Russian political hierarchy, albeit in a less public-facing capacity.

A Vocal Advocate in the Digital Age

As the commencement of the Russian invasion of Ukraine ⁣in February 2022, Dmitry Medvedev ⁤has emerged as a staunch and vocal supporter of President Putin’s actions. He launched a‍ Telegram channel shortly after ⁤the invasion, rapidly becoming one⁤ of Russia’s most popular bloggers by the end of 2022. This digital platform has not ⁢only amplified his voice but has also significantly reshaped his public image. His public trust rating, which stood at 23% in 2021 according to ⁣pollster⁣ VTsIOM, surged to 45.7% by June 2025,⁤ indicating a notable increase in public approval, likely driven by his assertive online presence.

Medvedev’s recent public exchanges, particularly with former U.S.President donald Trump, have garnered significant attention.⁣ The current exchange ‍was ignited by a post from Trump on July 29, warning of U.S. sanctions against Russia if it did not cease the war in Ukraine. Medvedev dismissed this as a “theatrical ultimatum,” asserting that “each new ultimatum ⁢is a threat and a step towards war.” He further cautioned Trump⁤ against adopting a confrontational stance, stating that Russia was not “Israel or even Iran” and advising him not to “go down⁤ the Sleepy Joe road.” ⁢Trump, in response, derided⁢ Medvedev as “the failed former President of Russia, ‍who thinks he’s still President.”

Medvedev retorted via Telegram, stating, “If some words from the former president of Russia trigger ⁣such a
