According to a Cochrane systematic review updated in September 2026, lower-back lumbar supports used on their own without additional treatments may not reduce pain or disability in adults experiencing chronic low back pain. Researchers evaluated eight randomized controlled trials involving 501 participants to determine the effectiveness of lumbar braces, corsets, and belts.
Evaluating Lumbar Supports and Pain Medication
Data analyzed by lead researchers Chiara Arienti and colleagues indicate that combining lumbar supports with pain medication may result in a small reduction in pain intensity after three to four weeks compared to using pain medication on its own. However, according to the review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the evidence regarding disability outcomes remains very uncertain. The authors noted that previous studies evaluated participants aged 25 to 78 years who had experienced chronic low back pain for between one and five years. Out of the eight randomized controlled trials included in the evaluation, five took place in low- and middle-income countries including Bangladesh, Iran, and Turkey, while three were conducted in high-income countries including Japan and the United States.
Uncertainty in Combined Rehabilitation Therapies
The review also examined whether adding lumbar supports to broader rehabilitation programs provides added benefits. Researchers found that current evidence is very uncertain regarding whether adding lumbar supports to exercise and education programs improves pain and disability after six weeks compared to exercise and education alone. Similarly, the analysis reported high uncertainty when combining lumbar supports with general physiotherapy treatments—such as ultrasound, low-intensity electrical currents, heat, and flexibility exercises—compared to physiotherapy administered on its own.
Gaps in Assistive Device Research
The Cochrane review highlighted significant gaps in current medical literature regarding assistive technologies for back pain. Although devices such as wheelchairs, mobility scooters, crutches, walking sticks, and walking frames are frequently prescribed in clinical practice, no eligible studies tested these mobility devices for chronic low back pain.
