The Department of Health has initiated the construction of a new building at Doctor Balmis Hospital to accommodate ambulatory activity. The new facility will house three main areas: major outpatient surgery, digestive endoscopy, and pediatric oncology.
The Department has allocated 1.8 million euros for drafting the project and construction management.
According to the Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, this project “represents one of the most critically important infrastructure advancement actions of the current legislature in this health department, as with it we expand the square meters of sanitary use and achieve cover a ancient need for increased spaces destined to surgical activity.”
The plan also includes an administrative building, new units for rare diseases and hematology, and a new public cafeteria. The estimated bidding budget for the overall project is close to 28 million euros.
The new building will house a new surgery area. Gomez specified that it “will increase the number of ambulatory surgery operating rooms and intensify our surgical activity. We will also have a new Digestive Endoscopy Unit with more endoscopy rooms, and the Pediatric Oncology Day Hospital will be able to have broader facilities better adapted to the needs of children in oncological treatment.”
the Minister detailed that the new building will have 11,600 square meters distributed across 10 floors. In the first phase, 4,950 square meters will be occupied for the main services, leaving 6,650 square meters on six floors for future services in a second phase.
The current tender focuses on drafting the project and construction management, planned for the space occupied by the old cafeteria of the center, currently unused, near the entrance on Master Street Alonso.
Major Ambulatory Surgery
Doctor Balmis Hospital performs approximately 13,400 outpatient surgery interventions annually. The new unit will have eight operating rooms.
A dedicated unit for major outpatient surgery, staffed with trained medical and nursing personnel, increases surgical performance, improves care quality, reduces delays, increases patient safety, and improves patient satisfaction. This will also free up operating rooms in the general block for patients requiring hospital admission after their intervention and release hospitalization beds currently used for outpatient surgery.
Digestive Endoscopy Unit
The digestive endoscopy unit performs an average of 12,200 endoscopic procedures annually. the current unit has four endoscopic exploration rooms, which will increase to nine in the new location.
Due to advances in therapeutic endoscopy and increased activity, the current space is insufficient. The new unit will double the number of rooms and considerably expand the spaces, meeting growing demand and adapting to constant changes. This improvement will guarantee more efficient and modern attention, adapting to technological advances and the growing complexity of procedures, improving the ability to respond to current health challenges.
Oncology and Pediatric and Adolescent Hematology
The area of external consultations and the day hospital of Oncology and Pediatric and Adolescent Hematology attends to more than 5,000 annual consultations of children and adolescents between the ages of 0 and 18 with onco-hematological conditions.
The day hospital manages between 15 and 20 daily catheter and bomb management procedures, blood extractions, chemotherapy administrations of less than five hours, blood derivative transfusions, antibiotic therapy, and other techniques.
