Schmitt’s Grand Slam Plays Vital Role in giants’ 6-2 Win Over Dodgers
San Francisco—Casey Schmitt’s first career grand slam and a strong pitching performance from Logan Webb helped the San Francisco Giants defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 Friday night.The victory came in the series opener between the top two teams in the National league West.
Webb (6-5) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He recorded four strikeouts and three walks. Notably, Webb struck out Shohei Ohtani twice during the game. this marks Webb’s first win since May 16 against the Oakland Athletics. He played a key role in shutting down the Dodgers’ offense.
Schmitt’s grand slam, a 423-foot shot to left-center field, broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with two outs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-5) walked Jung Hoo Lee and Heliot Ramos, then struck out two before walking Wilmer Flores to load the bases for Schmitt.
Yamamoto lasted 4 2/3 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits. He walked a season-high five batters and struck out four.
Willy Adames contributed a home run for the Giants in the first inning.
In the second inning, Webb walked Freddie Freeman and Will Smith consecutively. Max Muncy’s fielder’s choice and andy Pages’ sacrifice fly allowed Smith to score.
teoscar Hernández added another run for the Dodgers with a home run off Webb in the seventh.
The game marked the first meeting between the two teams this season, the latest they have met in a season since 1999. Last year, the Dodgers held a 9-4 advantage over the Giants, including a 6-1 record at home.
Giants catcher andrew Knizer recorded his first hit and home run of the season in the eighth inning against Justin Wrobleski. The ball hit the wall in center field.
The Giants tallied 10 hits in the game, with Dominic Smith leading the way with three.
