Chinese automaker BYD has confirmed that its new Seal 08 DM-p plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will offer an all-electric range of up to 300 kilometers under the WLTP test cycle, a figure typically associated with fully electric vehicles rather than plug-in hybrids.

The announcement, made during a technical briefing in Shenzhen on April 16, 2026, highlights BYD’s continued push to redefine expectations for plug-in hybrid technology by leveraging its proprietary Blade Battery and 800-volt electrical architecture. The Seal 08 DM-p is built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 Evo, which supports both pure electric and plug-in hybrid configurations.

According to BYD’s internal testing data shared with reporters, the Seal 08 DM-p achieves its extended electric range through a combination of a 21.5 kWh Blade Battery pack, high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous motors and intelligent energy management software that prioritizes electric driving under urban conditions. The vehicle can recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes using a 200 kW DC fast charger, a capability uncommon in the plug-in hybrid segment.

The Seal 08 DM-p is positioned as a premium variant of BYD’s Seal sedan lineup, targeting consumers who want the flexibility of a plug-in hybrid but desire a driving experience closer to that of a battery electric vehicle. BYD claims that under typical daily commuting patterns, many owners may be able to complete their weekly travel without using the gasoline engine at all.

Industry analysts note that achieving a 300-kilometer electric range in a plug-in hybrid challenges conventional assumptions about the trade-offs between battery size, weight, and cost in dual-powertrain vehicles. Most plug-in hybrids currently on the market offer electric ranges between 50 and 100 kilometers, relying on the internal combustion engine for longer trips.

BYD’s ability to deliver extended electric range in a plug-in hybrid format stems from its vertical integration in battery production, particularly its Blade Battery technology, which offers improved energy density and thermal safety compared to conventional lithium-ion packs. The company has also invested heavily in 800-volt platforms across its vehicle lineup, enabling faster charging and improved efficiency.

The Seal 08 DM-p is expected to launch in select European markets in the third quarter of 2026, with pricing anticipated to start below €45,000 before incentives. BYD has not yet confirmed exact specifications for regional variants, including whether the 300-kilometer electric range will be available in all markets or subject to local testing standards.

As of April 2026, BYD remains the world’s largest producer of new energy vehicles by volume, having sold over 4.2 million plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles globally in 2025. The company continues to expand its international footprint, with growing sales in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
