Brookhaven, MS — Two years after opening Wild Fox Coffee, Dana and Jason Matte have achieved another milestone: the grand opening of Dog Ear Books. Thursday afternoon, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of new books as customers browsed the shelves, celebrating the bookstore’s official ribbon cutting.Dana Matte’s dream of opening an independent bookstore in Brookhaven was first shared with The Daily Leader in December 2022. Recognizing the need for a local bookstore,she knew combining it with a coffee shop was the key too success.
“It has been a long ride without a doubt,” Dana saeid, beaming with pride. ”We are excited to have it open. We have been needing a bookstore for a long time. Jason built the bookshelves and we have spent a lot of nights here. It has been a long haul but we are proud of what we have.”
The couple purchased the building at 512 West Monticello Street in April 2022 and began renovations. Wild Fox Coffee opened its doors in november 2022, with Dog Ear Books finally welcoming customers in October 2024.
Jason Matte, who works at Walmart Distribution Center, dedicated countless hours outside of work, meticulously crafting custom bookshelves for the store.Dana, a nurse practitioner at Kings Daughters Medical Center, lent a helping hand whenever she could.

“We wanted to bring something unique to Brookhaven,” Jason said. “We want them to stay home and get the same experience.”

“People come in and get their coffee. They shop for books while waiting,” Dana observed. “It does my heart good to see people spend time with each other.”
