MANILA, Philippines – The grim search for missing cockfight enthusiasts has taken a disturbing turn, with Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus crispin Remulla confirming the discovery of human remains in sacks recovered from Taal Lake. The announcement came during a press briefing at the DOJ on thursday, July 17, 2025, providing a stark update on the ongoing inquiry.
Grim Discovery in Taal Lake
Secretary Remulla revealed that two of the four sacks retrieved by the Philippine coast Guard (PCG) from the lake contained undeniable human remains. “two sacks were found, I don’t know how many people,” Remulla stated, detailing that a preliminary examination revealed “the ribs of man” among the contents. The remaining two sacks, believed to have been used as weights, were filled with sand.
The crucial breakthrough in locating these sacks came with the assistance of local boatmen, who were identified by whistleblower Julie Patidongan, also known as “Totoy.” Patidongan had previously alleged that as many as 100 victims were disposed of in the lake. Remulla emphasized that the discovery validates Patidongan’s claims, stating, “The discovery of the two sacks of human remains is a positive indication that he (Patidongan) knew what he was talking about.”
Unclaimed Cadavers Surface
Adding to the gravity of the situation, police investigators have also recovered three unclaimed cadavers from the town’s public cemetery. These individuals are believed to be among those who went missing in connection with the e-sabong (online cockfighting) abductions in Lipa, Batangas, and were reportedly recovered from the lake in 2020.
“One of them was pregnant,” Remulla shared, noting that another victim was identified by the basketball jersey they were wearing at the time of thier disappearance. This recovery further strengthens the link between the missing persons and the alleged crimes.
ongoing Investigation and Future Steps
The DOJ, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, is meticulously piecing together the events that led to these tragic discoveries. The focus remains on identifying the victims and bringing those responsible to justice.
Authorities are also exercising caution regarding further diving operations. Secretary Remulla indicated that seismic activity in the taal volcano will be closely monitored before any decisions are made to proceed with additional underwater searches. This precautionary measure underscores the commitment to the safety of the investigation team while continuing the pursuit of truth and accountability.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities persistent to uncover the full extent of the alleged crimes and provide closure to the families of the missing.
