Dollar General Boosts ‍Outlook as Middle-Class Shoppers Seek Value

Updated June 04, 2025

Shares⁤ of⁣ Dollar General surged nearly 16% Tuesday after the company increased its financial outlook.⁢ The discount retailer ⁤reported it is attracting more middle- and higher-income shoppers, who‍ are seeking value amid concerns about tariffs and consumer spending.

The tennessee-based company exceeded Wall Street’s expectations for both revenue and earnings in the first quarter. Dollar General now projects net sales‍ growth of 3.7% to 4.7%, up‍ from⁣ its⁣ previous forecast of 3.4%⁣ to 4.4%.⁤ Diluted ‍earnings per share are expected to be between $5.20⁢ and $5.80, compared to the earlier range of $5.10 to $5.80.‍ Same-store sales are anticipated⁤ to‍ rise 1.5% to 2.5%, exceeding the⁢ prior⁤ guidance of 1.2% to 2.2%. This positive performance highlights Dollar General’s ability to capture a broader customer base seeking affordable options.

For ‍the fiscal first quarter, Dollar General reported:

  • Earnings per share: $1.78 vs. $1.48 expected
  • Revenue: $10.44 billion vs. $10.31 billion expected

Net income for the three-month period ending May 2 reached $391.93 million, or $1.78 per share, compared to $363.32 million, or $1.65 per share,in ⁤the same quarter last year. The company’s focus ‍on providing value is resonating with a ⁤wider range of consumers.

Year-to-date, Dollar General ⁢shares have risen approximately 48%, significantly outperforming the S&P⁣ 500’s roughly 1% gain during the same period.⁣ The retailer’s shares closed at $112.57 on Tuesday, giving Dollar General a market value of $24.76 billion. This growth underscores ⁤the company’s strong position in the retail⁢ market.

dollar General’s CEO, ⁣Todd Vasos, addressed the impact of tariffs on an earnings call. He said the company has been actively working to minimize its ⁤exposure to China ⁤and limit price increases ⁢for shoppers. Strategies include collaborating with vendors to reduce costs, shifting manufacturing to other countries, and modifying or replacing products.

“While⁣ the tariff landscape remains dynamic and uncertain, we expect tariffs to result in some price increases as a last ⁣resort, though, we intend to work to minimize them⁤ as much as possible,” Vasos said.

Kelly Dilts, CFO, noted that the full-year guidance assumes Dollar General will ⁣offset a ⁣notable portion of⁤ the anticipated tariff impact on its gross margin, while also accounting for potential pressure on consumer spending.

although customer traffic dipped slightly by 0.3% in the first quarter compared to last year, shoppers spent ⁤more ⁤per visit. The average transaction amount increased by 2.7%,⁤ with sales growth across food, seasonal items, home goods, and apparel. This indicates that while fewer customers may be visiting, those who do are making larger purchases.

Vasos also noted that tariffs have increased U.S. consumers’ desire for deep discounts. He attributed Dollar General’s first-quarter success to attracting “customers across multiple income bands ⁤seeking value.” Store traffic and market research indicate that more middle- and higher-income customers are visiting stores more frequently and spending ⁣more per visit.

“We are pleased to see this growth with a wide range of customers and ⁢are excited about our ongoing⁢ prospect to grow [market] share with them,” Vasos said.

These gains are particularly critically important as Dollar General’s core customer base “remains financially constrained,” according to Vasos. A company survey revealed that 25% of customers reported lower incomes compared⁢ to the previous year, and nearly 60% of core customers anticipate ⁣needing ⁢to sacrifice on necessities in the coming year.

In addition to attracting value-conscious shoppers, Dollar General ⁤has been addressing company-specific challenges, including workplace safety violations. The company has paid significant fines to the Labor Department for issues such as blocked fire⁤ exits and excessive clutter.

Vasos highlighted efforts to improve the customer experience, including reducing employee turnover and removing approximately 1,000 individual⁢ items from shelves to ensure top-selling items remain in stock. Dollar General has also expanded its merchandise categories beyond food and snacks, adding more discretionary items like seasonal decor and home goods,⁣ which have seen increased sales from middle- and higher-income shoppers.

What’s⁢ next

Looking ahead, dollar General will continue to focus on managing tariff impacts, enhancing the customer experience, and expanding its reach to value-seeking shoppers across various income levels. The company’s Popshelf chain, which caters to consumers with higher household incomes, will also play a key role in driving future growth.
