Dolly Parton to Receive Honorary Oscar for Humanitarian Role
Country music icon Dolly Parton,79,will be honored with an honorary Oscar at the Governors awards in November. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will recognize Parton alongside Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas.
Academy president Janet Yang lauded Parton for her “lasting impact.” Yang said Parton embodies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her charitable efforts.
Parton established the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 in Tennessee. The foundation, created in partnership with the dollywood theme park, initially focused on educational initiatives for children in Tennessee. It later expanded with the Creativity Library, which provides books to young children.
While Parton has never won an Oscar, she received two nominations. Her song “9 to 5” from the film of the same name, was nominated for Best Original Song in 1981. “Travelin’ Thru,” written for the 2006 film “Transamerica,” also earned a nomination.
