The body of Aziz Ziriat, a 36-year-old British hiker, has been discovered in the Dolomites, Italy, according to italian search teams. Ziriat, from London, was found in a rocky crevice approximately 1,300 feet below where the body of his friend, Sam Harris, 35, had been located earlier.
Ziriat and Harris, also from London, disappeared in January while hiking in the Italian alps. Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue confirmed that specialist search teams, including a canine unit, found Ziriat’s body in the Passo di Conca area during the search and rescue operation.
A rescue team spokesman said they ”lowered themselves down the wall below the base of the slope, where the dog finally signalled the missing man’s body in a rocky crevice, where it had been covered by snow.” The family of the missing hiker was instantly notified following the discovery.
Harris’s body was found Jan. 8. The two friends had last been seen or heard from on Jan. 1 and did not check in for their return flight home on Jan.6. Their last known location was near the Casina Dosson mountain hut, close to Tione Di Trento and Riva Del Garda on Lake Garda, a popular destination for mountain hiking.
Ziriat worked as head of community engagement for Palace for Life, the official charity of Crystal Palace FC. The institution previously released a statement expressing their “profound sadness” at his disappearance, highlighting his “real passion to make a difference.”
The statement added, “Aziz has not only been incredibly impactful in his role, but also a kind, compassionate and generous individual who brought positivity and warmth to everyone he has worked with.”
Joe Stone,a university friend,previously noted that Ziriat and Harris were experienced hikers who enjoyed venturing off the grid. Though, concerns arose when they missed their return flight.
