Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis is returning to the basketball court for training camp without pain after recovering from the first major injury and surgery of his career, an ordeal that sidelined him for the vast majority of the previous season. Speaking at the team’s media day, the 30-year-old big man outlined his rehabilitation process, addressed ongoing trade rumors, and expressed optimism about the revamped roster ahead of the upcoming National Basketball Association season.
A Difficult Rehabilitation Following First Career Surgery
Sabonis described the past season as one of the hardest of his career after he suffered a serious left knee meniscus injury during just the second game of the year. The 208-centimeter, 109-kilogram player attempted to push through the injury for 17 more games before undergoing a surgical procedure that required him to spend six weeks on crutches. Reflecting on the recovery period, Sabonis noted the emotional toll of watching from the sidelines as the Kings struggled through a difficult campaign.
There was a lot of emotions. I got the injury in just the second game of the season, tried to push through another 17 games, and then had to have surgery. It was a completely different experience for me—being on the sidelines, but I certainly learned a lot from it.

While the physical rehabilitation was demanding, Sabonis admitted that the mental challenge of immobility at home with young children proved equally difficult. He acknowledged that looking back, he might have opted for immediate surgery rather than attempting to play through the pain for 17 additional matches, though he maintains that his initial motivation was simply to help the team.
Addressing External Trade Rumors and Roster Changes
Entering the new season amidst persistent speculation regarding his future in Sacramento, Sabonis dismissed external reports as unfounded. He emphasized that he maintains direct communication with his representatives and Kings general manager Scott Perry, effectively insulating himself from outside chatter by limiting his time on social media.

A lot of things are made up… I don’t know where you guys get most of the information. I talk to Scott and my agents, so I don’t spend that much time on social media. But everything is pretty simple. I have my kids and I just focus on the most important things.
Domantas Sabonis, Kings Center Sabonis also expressed enthusiasm regarding the team’s offseason acquisitions under head coach Doug Christie and the front office. Noting that the roster has added significant size and playmaking capability, the center believes the additions will alleviate pressure on his own responsibilities on the floor. When asked by reporters whether he is prepared to shift to the power forward position if requested, Sabonis confirmed that he is willing to fulfill any role required to help the team succeed.
Looking Ahead to the Training Camp Tip-Off
With the training camp opening, Sabonis emphasized a renewed appreciation for his professional career following the lengthy layoff. Rather than establishing specific statistical targets for individual improvement, his primary focus is simply experiencing the game without physical limitations.
When I was away from basketball for so long, I realized one thing—we are NBA players. This is amazing and we have to enjoy every moment. That’s what we worked for since childhood. So I just want to come back.
