Law enforcement officials announced that a suspect involved in the fatal shooting of a Harris County woman died by suicide after investigators tracked him to a Phenix City hotel on Aug. 18, 2026, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Russell County Sheriff’s Office.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call on Aug. 17, 2026, about a woman lying unresponsive in her front yard outside of Waverly Hall, Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley said during an Aug. 18 news conference covered by Yahoo. Responding deputies found 35-year-old Nicole Karastury Elliott deceased from a single gunshot wound.
Elliott was involved in a domestic dispute with 36-year-old Andrew Roy Harris of Phenix City around 10 a.m. on Aug. 17, according to Jolley. Investigators determined Elliott was fatally shot during that dispute before Harris fled the scene.
Investigation and Suspect Death at Phenix City Hotel
After the incident, Harris fled to Phenix City, prompting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to contact the Russell County Sheriff’s Office for assistance, Jolley said.
The Russell County Sheriff’s Office received a tip through the Phenix City Police Department indicating Harris was staying at the Days Inn on Highway 431 in Phenix City, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said during the news conference. Law enforcement officers were in the process of evacuating people from nearby rooms when investigators heard a single gunshot.
We went into his room at that point and found Mr. Harris lying on the bed with a single gunshot wound to his head.

Harris was still holding a 9mm semiautomatic gun, Taylor said. Law enforcement personnel attempted to save Harris, but he was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2026.
Elliott left behind three children, including a 15-year-old daughter, a 10-year-old son, and an 8-year-old son, according to Jolley. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Elliott’s children, raising about $14,000 toward its $24,000 goal from 195 donations as of publication.
History of Domestic Violence and Systemic Concerns
Harris had a documented history of domestic violence, with three to six cases recorded in Georgia and Alabama involving Elliott and other women, Taylor said. Law enforcement had recently been called to Elliott’s home regarding domestic dispute incidents, and Harris was out on bond for a case involving Elliott at the time of the shooting.
She had helped get him out. That’s the problem with domestic violence. Women are victims, even though they don’t want to admit they’re victims of domestic violence.

Elliott went to a bondsman and helped Harris secure a secondary bond, Jolley said, adding that there will never be closure for Elliott’s family. Jolley noted that Harris suffered from an anger management problem that he directed at his romantic partners.
He never sought or got the right help, which is a shame. And that might be a failure in our system.

Taylor emphasized that law enforcement agencies encounter domestic violence daily. While incidents do not always escalate to homicide, authorities are observing cases involving both men and women.
We need to get the individuals who have the anger management problems help. Mental health is a huge issue in our community.
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor
Taylor stated that the majority of individuals housed in the Russell County Jail are mental health patients, and those who are not currently classified as patients need to be. According to the 2025 Annual Family Violence Fact Sheet published by the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, Georgia recorded 42,184 incidents of family violence in 2024.
