Domhnall Gleeson has opened up about the end of his time in the Star Wars franchise, describing his character General Hux’s demise in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as devastating, according to an interview with Slashfilm. The actor confirmed he wished he had more screen time in the final installment of the sequel trilogy, though he expressed satisfaction with the specific actor who dispatched him across a black corridor.

Playing the First Order military commander who served as Supreme Leader Snoke’s right-hand, Gleeson saw his character evolve from a minor antagonist into a Resistance turncoat attempting to undermine rivals like Kylo Ren and Allegiant General Pryde. In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Pryde ultimately kills him. According to Slashfilm, Gleeson shared his unfiltered reaction to the exit while promoting his upcoming film The Incomer.
Devastating. Absolutely devastating. I wanted to be in that more and they killed me off. But they had to. And actually, if you’re going to die, having Richard E. Grant be the one who blasts you across a black corridor, that’s pretty cool. Yes, I was happy it was Richard who did it, but I was sad to go.

While Gleeson was present to film portions of the execution sequence, he revealed that he left the heavier physical demands of the death scene to professionals. According to Slashfilm, the actor explained that stunt performers handled the intensive movement required for the character’s final moments. They pulled me back on some of it and I had to do a fall back, but the big drag back was a stunt performer who did a great job, Gleeson told Slashfilm, noting a similar experience working on 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. When the stunt performers are that amazing, I’m more than happy to hand it over.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed over $1 billion globally following its theatrical release.
