Dominican citizens living abroad will be able to begin the renewal process for their new identity cards, known as the cédula, starting Wednesday, May 20, 2026, according to reporting from Listín Diario.
Implementation and Expansion
The expansion of the renewal program to include the diaspora follows the implementation of the new identification system within the Dominican Republic. El Nacional reported that the Junta Central Electoral (JCE) has already distributed 182,000 of the new identity cards on a national level.
Efforts to facilitate the process for citizens in the United States are also underway. According to eldia.com.do, the Dominican Consul in New York is working to manage the opening of new JCE offices to assist the community with the transition.
The rollout of the new identification documents has been met with observations regarding its efficiency. Acento reported that citizens have noted the organization and speed of the JCE during the renewal process.
