Donald Glover Says Community Movie Is Happening Soon

Donald Glover has provided a new update regarding the long-anticipated Community spinoff film, stating that the project is currently in development and is expected to happen soon.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Glover assured fans that the movie is not dead. He stated that he and his co-stars have been actively discussing the project through a group text chain, which he described as having a pretty lovey dovey feel. Glover noted the high volume of communication within the group, mentioning that when he is on the other side of the world, he will often wake up to 83 messages from the cast.

The film was officially greenlit by Peacock in September 2022. The project is being helmed by series creator Dan Harmon and is intended to reunite the original main cast, including Donald Glover, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong.

Despite the 2022 approval, the project has faced several setbacks. Production did not begin following the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, despite an opportunity to start at that time. Some observers have attributed the delays to Glover’s professional schedule, but the actor has explicitly denied being the cause of the hold-up.

In 2024, Joel McHale provided his own update, stating that his own schedule was the primary reason filming had been delayed. At that time, McHale suggested that the most likely shooting schedule would be vaguely next year, referring to 2025.

Script Status and Cast Involvement

While the film has yet to enter production, some cast members have already engaged with the material. Frequent guest star Ken Jeong confirmed in late 2024 that he had read the script. Jeong described the writing as magical and stated that it was real emotional, noting that the script brought him right back to the world of the show.

Glover, who also records music as Childish Gambino, previously confirmed his own involvement in the project, stating he was all in.

The original Community sitcom ran for six seasons between 2009 and 2015, totaling over 100 episodes. The series became known for its campus hijinks and a recurring ensemble of characters, including the study group led by characters like Jeff Winger, Abed, Troy, Shirley, Britta, and Annie.

In early 2026, former cast member Chevy Chase addressed his abrupt departure from the series in 2012. Chase’s character was written out of the show in the fifth season following conflicts with Dan Harmon and reports regarding the use of a racial slur. Chase denied the allegations, stating that the situation was a too great a misunderstanding of his words and asserting that he is not racist.

Chase attributed the reaction to his exit to a lack of familiarity with his previous body of work, suggesting that those involved were too young to be aware of his career, which led to a visceral reaction from them.
