Donald Trump Appoints Mehmet Oz and Howard Lutnick in Key Roles

Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the agency overseeing health insurance programs for low-income, disabled, and elderly Americans. Oz is a former television host and heart surgeon. Trump also appointed Howard Lutnick, a Wall Street executive, as Secretary of Commerce.

In a statement, Trump praised Oz as a leader who will promote disease prevention and improve healthcare spending efficiency. Trump highlighted Oz’s role in reducing waste and fraud within the government agency that accounts for a significant portion of national healthcare spending.

Oz previously ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania in 2022 but did not win. He has been a strong supporter of Trump and recently backed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the role of Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

If confirmed by the Senate, Oz would manage programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which provide health insurance to millions of Americans. Medicaid delivers nearly free health coverage to low-income children and adults, while Medicare serves elderly and disabled citizens. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers insurance options to those who do not qualify for government-subsidized plans or employer-sponsored insurance.

Oz stated that Americans need unbiased scientific research to promote healthier lifestyles and believes Kennedy can support this goal in his potential role at HHS.

Meanwhile, Lutnick’s role as Commerce Secretary will involve implementing Trump’s plans for trade tariffs. He is a cryptocurrency advocate and serves as the CEO of investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald.

Trump announced these appointments on his social media platform, Truth Social, highlighting Lutnick’s responsibilities regarding trade policies.
