Donate Your Hair This Holiday Season: Help Kids in Need with Wigs for Kids
Donate Your Hair This Holiday Season
The holiday season is a great time to help others. If you have long hair, consider donating it. Many people are unaware that they can contribute by giving their hair.
Great Clips salons across the country partner with Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit organization. This group provides wigs for children who experience hair loss, often due to cancer treatments. Elana Lyrek, assistant manager and stylist at Great Clips Crossroads Center, emphasizes the impact of hair donations. “The hair is provided for children in need of wigs that are going through cancer treatments,” she says.
Hair loss affects about 3% of pediatric visits in the United States, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Lyrek, with 18 years of experience, has seen many young clients facing hair loss. “You really feel for the people going through treatments, especially when you see younger kids who have to shave their heads,” she adds.
Real-hair wigs help children regain their sense of identity during tough times. “It helps give kids back their identity after losing their hair,” Lyrek notes. Donating hair is a meaningful way to support these kids.
To donate hair to Wigs for Kids, your hair must be at least 12 inches long. Ensure it’s clean, dry, and undyed. After cutting, place your hair in a plastic bag and envelope for delivery to the organization. Your donation could make a big difference in a child’s life.
