The Colorado Rapids earned a point in a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park as the regular season begins to wind down, coloradorapids.com reported.
Colorado Rapids Play to Draw Against San Jose
The Colorado Rapids entered the match following a week-long break due to the FIFA international window, sitting eighth in the Western Conference with 37 points and an 11-13-4 record. San Jose arrived at fourth in the West with 46 points and a 13-8-7 record.
The pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Designated Player Paxten Aaronson served a corner kick into the box. Forward Donavan Phillip rose to head the cross past the defense, putting the hosts ahead 1-0. The strike was Phillip’s third of his MLS career, with all three goals coming in his last three appearances. At 21 years and 279 days old, Phillip became the youngest player in club history to score in three consecutive matches. Aaronson’s assist gave him six goal contributions across his last five MLS appearances, consisting of three goals and three assists.
Second-Half Equalizer Secures Split Points
San Jose shifted momentum after halftime and found the equalizer in the 57th minute through defender Dave Romney. Colorado pressed for a winner late in the match, coming closest in the 86th minute when another Aaronson corner kick found Wayne Fredrick. Fredrick directed a header toward the goal, but the ball clipped the goalpost and bounced out of the box.
The Earthquakes earned three free kicks in the final six minutes of regulation, but the Rapids defensive line blocked all three late attempts to secure the draw. The result leaves Colorado with 38 points in the Western Conference standings ahead of their upcoming schedule.
Midweek Match Against Minnesota United
The Rapids continue their home stand with a match against Minnesota United scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park. Following the midweek fixture, Colorado will travel away from home to face the Portland Timbers.
