Convoy,Donegal – The familiar green and gold of Kerry might be a common sight in the Kingdom, but seeing it proudly displayed on a Bus Éireann driver in the heart of Donegal has been causing quite a stir this week. Geoff Cotter, a proud Kerryman who has called Convoy home for the past two decades, is literally “driving” Donegal fans around the bend with his unwavering support for his native county.
A Kerryman’s Life in Donegal
Geoff, originally from Tralee, has embraced life in Donegal with open arms. He’s married to jo (née Cowan),a local woman, and together they raise their two sons,Isaac (14) and Sam (12),just a stone’s throw from the Donegal GAA Center of Excellence. This unique position, living amidst the passionate Donegal GAA community while holding onto his Kerry roots, makes Geoff’s presence a talking point, especially during the intense build-up to major clashes between the two counties.
The Sam Maguire Debate: A Family Affair
As the Sam Maguire trophy inches closer to its destination, the kind banter in the Cotter household is reaching fever pitch.Geoff,a staunch Kerry supporter,is confident that the coveted trophy will be making the familiar journey back to his native county on Monday.
“There has been a bit of slagging going on in the house with Jo and the boys all week,” Geoff shared with a chuckle.”And I enjoy nothing more than proudly wearing my Kerry jersey when the Donegal supporters are getting on the bus.”
He admits that if Kerry emerge victorious, he might not be allowed to forget it, especially given Kerry’s decisive win over Donegal in 2014. “If Kerry win, I will never be allowed to live it down – especially after beating Donegal so easily in 2014,” he added with a grin.
A Familiar Face on the Supporters’ Bus
Adding to the intrigue, Geoff is on standby to drive one of the official supporters’ buses to Dublin for the upcoming match. For any Donegal fan spotting Geoff behind the wheel, particularly with his Kerry colours on, a friendly thumbs-down might be in order – or perhaps a good-natured wave! it’s a testament to the deep-seated passion for Gaelic football that transcends county lines, creating these wonderfully human and often humorous rivalries.
This story highlights the vibrant tapestry of GAA life, where personal allegiances and community spirit intertwine, creating memorable moments and friendly rivalries that are as much a part of the game as the scores on the board.
