Early Life and Career
Born Donna Jean Thatcher on June 29, 1945, in Florence, Alabama, Godchaux-mackay began her musical journey early. she honed her vocal skills performing in gospel and R&B groups. Before joining the Grateful Dead, she was a sought-after session singer in Memphis, Tennessee, contributing to hits like Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious minds” (1969) and “When a Man loves a Woman” (1966). her distinctive voice added depth and texture to these iconic tracks.
With the Grateful Dead (1972-1979)
godchaux-MacKay joined the Grateful Dead in 1972, becoming a key part of their live performances and studio recordings. Her vocals blended seamlessly with Jerry Garcia’s guitar and Bob Weir’s rhythm playing, adding a new dimension to the band’s sound. She married Grateful Dead keyboardist Keith Godchaux in 1973, and the two performed together extensively until their divorce in 1979.
