(Los Angeles=Yonhap News) Correspondent Im Mina = The election camp of former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the United States, is using hit songs by pop stars without permission, which is causing a series of backlash from the parties involved.

According to CNN and other broadcasters on the 28th (local time), the Trump camp played pop star Beyonce’s latest album song “Texas Hold ‘Em” at a campaign event held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on the 31st of last month.

Also last week, Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Chung used Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” as background music in a video he posted on social media.

Beyoncé has long been known to support the Democratic Party, and ‘Freedom’ is a song that Beyoncé gave permission for Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, to use, and the Harris camp is using it as a representative ‘campaign song’.

According to Rolling Stone, an American music magazine, immediately after Spokesperson Chung used “Freedom,” Beyoncé’s record label warned the Trump campaign that they would take legal action if they did not stop using the song. The video was later deleted.

Spokesperson Chung told CNN that the song was deliberately used to provoke the Democratic Party, “to show that the Democratic Party is only interested in banning everything, including freedom.”

A song by the world-famous rock band Foo Fighters was also recently used without permission at a Trump campaign rally.

The Trump campaign played the Foo Fighters’ hit song “My Hero” at an event held in Arizona on the 23rd.

A Foo Fighters spokesperson said the Trump campaign never asked for permission to use the song, and that “any royalties we receive for the use of this song will be donated to the Harris campaign.”

Previously, Celine Dion also immediately protested when a video of her performing ‘My Heart Will Go On’, the theme song from the movie ‘Titanic’, was played at former President Trump’s rally.

Dion’s side posted a statement on their X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts, accusing the Trump campaign of “unauthorized use” and saying that they had never approved the song’s use.

The family of famous American soul musician Isaac Hayes (1942-2008) recently filed a lawsuit against the Trump campaign, seeking damages for the unauthorized use of Hayes’ songs.

Hayes’ family pointed out that the Trump campaign has played Hayes’ song “Hold On, I’m Coming” at every event since the 2020 presidential campaign, and that the song was also used at a rally in Bozeman, Montana, on the 9th.

The Hill, a political media outlet, reported that the compensation requested by Hayes’ family amounts to 3 million dollars (approximately 4.1 billion won).

Hayes’ son wrote to X on the 23rd, “The federal court has granted a request for an emergency hearing for the injunction,” and named former President Trump and others, saying, “See you in court.”

Legal circles believe that Hayes’s family has a high chance of winning the case.
